it took me several seconds to figure out what my child was saying to me. One afternoon i sat her on the counter to give her a snack. i said, 'let's sit up here today.' she heard 'up here' and locked in her memory so that the very next afternoon that is precisely where she wanted her snack.

i am surprised that i even figured out what she meant. all i kept hearing was 'a beer?' and i thought, 'what in the world is bryan giving her? it looked like he was just letting her mouth touch the top of the bottle...'

after she settled into eating her snack, she declared, 'lips!' again, i had to think, 'ok, what about lips. yes, those are your lips', i replied. 'no, lips,' mya protested, now pointing to my mouth. 'yes, mya, these are mommy's lips.' 'NO! LIPS!' and then in an instant, i remembered putting on lip gloss in the car that morning when i turned to her and asked, 'does mya want some on her lips?' so i gave her the gloss and she grinned for the camera and all twenty shots of her. bryan says she wants to be just like me. for now, anyway. i am cherishing these moments because i do know that someday when twelve years have felt like as many days, i'll ask her if she wants to borrow my lip gloss. she will probably roll her eyes, mutter something about, 'as if', flick her hair over her shoulder and walk away talking on her cell phone as she goes, 'so, anyway, jenny...no, i don't have to go. that was just my mom...', as she morphs into a t-e-e-n-a-g-e-r!!!
sniff. i have to go find some kleenex.
