breakfast with tiffany

do you remember your first friend? this is my first friend, tiffany. we grew up in the same, small town, going to pre-school, elementary school, and middle school together. our moms went to the same aerobics classes and toted us along to play off to the side while they exercised. i have memories of playing on folded-up gymnastics mats with tiffan, not realizing at the time that was my first friendship.

tiffany has lived in chicago for many years. when she heard i was coming to see U2 last month she contacted me to see about getting together. i told her we'd be in line all day saturday at the stadium but suggested perhaps we could meet there and grab some lunch. the only problem was i couldn't hear my cell phone that day. that didn't stop tiffany. she found me, out of thousands of people, AND not having seen me in 20 years. actually, she spotted Bryan first, of all people, whom she recognized from photographs. she looked almost exactly the same.

it's kind of surreal seeing a friend you haven't seen for 2 decades. instantly memories flooded back of playing in each other's yards growing up, a time when our imaginations were young and we pretended we had horses and the freedom to go wherever we wanted to go.

the next morning we were able to share the most delicious belgian waffles with strawberries and whipped cream, and chocolate covered goodness on the side. it was brief but it was good. here's to you tiffan. i truly hope we see each other much sooner than 2 decades from now!
