brave super star

i can tell mya is three years old now because her independence and bravery are growing every day. she is aware of the things that are frightening to her and her need to overcome those fears. when i signed mya up for swim lessons at the ymca i wasn't sure how she'd take to getting in the water with the instructor who is a stranger. but she was so excited for her class to begin. i was looking forward to her class beginning! so here she is, bravely obeying her instructor even though she was afraid of her face going under the water. sure enough, mya got the bum flotation device. her instructor rigged a knot in the cord around her waist but it didn't work. AND her instructor turned her back on mya after telling mya to get in the water. down she went, for what seemed like a long time to mya and to me. i called out to her instructor three times before she heard me and was able to pull mya's face up out of the water. and even with that frightening experience, all mya calmly said was, 'i want to go see my mom'. as frustrated as i was with her instructor who seemed to be distracted from her class, i did encourage mya to jump back in. she was not interested. before you get concerned that mya is going to develop a fear of the water, you should know we have plans to get her right back in this afternoon. she will love it! and she will learn how to keep her head above water.



it was awesome to see her independence. look at her jumping in 4 feet of water with no help!


"flotation device not supposed to be submerged". i don't really like those things anyway, as they force a kid's face toward the water. it takes some getting used to.
